James F. Pettit, Jr., P.E. (Jim) is a licensed mechanical engineer in machine design and materials with 17+ years of experience. His licensure is currently active in 8 locations including California, District of Columbia, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, and Washington, with additional reciprocation in process.
Before starting Decypher Services, Jim gained experience working in various roles with a large OEM designing, inspecting, and repairing heavy rotating equipment (gas turbines and generators) in the power generation industry. Following the power generation experience, Jim spent multiple years investigating Significant Injury and Fatality (SIF) incidents and leading the SIF investigation team for a large public utility. During this time, he also provided corporate level root cause analysis course instruction and follow-up mentoring and qualification of investigators to perform RCA.
Throughout his career, Jim's work has always involved leading root cause analysis in the field and office; being reserved for the most complex and impactful incidents. He is no stranger to interacting with executive leadership and consultants during incidents as the technical root cause lead and company representative. He has presented technical topics to large groups of customers and professionals at customer user group and other professional conferences such as EPRI.
Jim is known for his integrity, mindfulness, clear, well-articulated communication, transparency, selflessness, and servant leadership. He is uncommonly social for an engineer and loves to support his community. Currently, he is volunteering at local schools to teach STEM programs while also mentoring current college engineering students. Jim is working to engage local colleges to begin instructing engineering courses.
